Reality Check For Authors #8: Meta-data Matters
Several years ago a finance guru told me that the most valuable commodity anyone has in their ‘toolbox’, is their ‘metadata’. At the time I wasn’t real sure what they meant by that, other than J. K. Rowling seemed to think so as well. Then I read Joel Friedlander’s post ‘Self-Publishing Basics: Introduction to Metadata — The Book Designer’, and did a ‘should of had a …’ well you know what, moment’.
To put a fast spin on a mind blowing issue, meta data is how a persons’ searching and buying patterns in the digital age, are tracted and yes, sold. Be it via the internet, brick and mortar, or even the library, readers use ‘key words’ or ‘tags’, to find and buy what they want.
Reality Check #8 Indie authors need to stay current on the algorithms and power words used by SEO’s like Google, Yahoo, Amazon and Bing. Key words, phrases, tags/hashtags that have the power to lead, drive and herd readers to our websites, buying portals and storefronts.
