Sharing the Glory

You’ve worked your kester off establishing your name, building a community, creating a credible-online presence, and getting that novel written, edited and published. The first ebook is already at Amazon.com and the hardcopy is due to hit the market anyday now. So all that’s really left to do before you hit the road and spend the next gazillion days of your life promoting it is…Celebrate! Party! Get together with your peeps and let the world know that despite what Uncle Carl and Aunt Suzie said about getting a real job, you’ve done it. Wrote your first book, seen it through the birthing canal of re-write>edit>production and now your ready to let your hair down (or take off the baseball cap if you don’t have hair) and get down.

Having not personally reached this milestone of success…yet,  I quickly went to Google and typed in ‘Writers Celebrating’.

I’m not sure what I expected, but it certainly wasn’t what I found. Instead of tequila shots, BBQ’s, block celebrations and rented limo’s (with the top open and someone standing up singing “We Are The Champions” by Queen),

all I could find were sober book readings, more conferences and dull, boring people talking about writing the next book (Yes I know that getting onto the next novel is crucial, but must we forget that we could also die tomorrow, and then where would that leave us?). So instead of ending this rather long series on Personal Branding with yet another sobering thought, I decided to give you something else. A visual of what celebrating all that hard work might look like instead.

Five Reasons to Blog Consistently

Keeping up with the Jones’s of authorship and platform building can be an exhausting, and on some days, seemingly unprofitable way to spend a writers time. What with getting the initial story down, working through the  labyrinth of editing, plus all the SM  we need to  stay in  the loop, we all wish we had more time in  a day than God allotted for.

But since we don’t, how do emerging writers like you and I find a way to juggle our writing time, stay connected, pump out a stream of  intelligent blog posts, go on the occasional date and still remain sane?

Well the good news is that while researching for my post, Personal Branding | Creating Author Visibility, I came across  Five Reasons.

  • Time

Blogging on a consistent schedule actually frees up more of our time, rather  than posting sporadically or on impulse.   By intentionally setting aside time to research, write and link our blog posts,  not only are we managing our time better, but we are,  in fact, giving ourselves an opportunity to develop  better content, communicate it more succinctly, and potentially  appear  more brilliant than we truly are.

  • Discipline

By committing to regularly posting we are learning  how to produce  quality content under deadline, whether we feel inspired to or not.  It’s one way of  forcing ourselves to push past that first creative stall,  and dig down deeper. Author of Lowcountry Bribe,  C. Hope Clark  said during her podcast interview with Austin Moss, that learning to write under deadline is one of the major tools that helped her become a better writer,  by teaching her how to say more,  with less.

  • Personal Branding

I’ve already covered this in my post on Personal Branding | Creating Author Visibility. But let me just add,  that not only is  blogging an invaluable tool to building an author’s platform, but it adds worth to the community he or she has moved into.

  • SEO Rating

Part of  our SEO rating has to do with content and consistency.  According to Corey Eridon of  blog.hubspot.comblogging on a regular schedule is critical to the continued success of SEO’s. Without it  Google may no longer put us on page ranking that is higher than that found in the outer Siberia of Internet-land.

  • Value

When we’re posting quality content on a consistent basis, we add value to our site by assuring those that follow us,  that when they stop by for a visit, there is an excellent chance that they’ll find exactly what they’re looking for.

So what kinds of tools can we use to help us do a better job of blogging consistently? Here are two I discovered and began implementing in order to improve my own attempts.

  • Blogging Template

Using blogging templates for creating content aid you and I in keeping our ideas, resources and content flow more organized. The blog template works as a guideline by helping us stay within the perimeters of where we started  and where we need to end.  In his post ”Six Blog Post Templates That Highly Effective Bloggers Use“, Don McAllister shares where he gets  his own inspiration for blogging templates from.

  • Editorial Calendar

Another tool that helps is called an Editorial Calendar. Michelle Linn, Content Developing Director for Content Marketing details this in her post, How to Put Together and Editorial Calendar for Content Marketing”.

Because of my need tactical visibility, I use Office Suite’s “Notebook” (a program that lets me create notebooks, build files, store source material, embed media and drop-drag whatever I’ve written or copied), Free Mind as well as good old fashion sticky notes.

So when should you and I start attempting to organize and schedule our posts, now.

If you’ve been neglectful and suffer from sporadic-posting-disorder; repent,  go and grab your favorite creative legal stimulant and get going. If on the other hand you’ve been a good writer and have tried and tried, but just haven’t gotten the swing of it yet; repent, go and grab your favorite legal stimulant and try it again.

Now for other A-Type personalities such as myself, a little humor along the way.

Game Show (1950-1968)

Marketing You

The 1950′s television show “What’s My Line“, was a game show that featured a panel of four people whose sole job was to guess the identity of a mystery guest.  Like any emerging author, the identity of the shows guest was unknown, and could only be discovered by someone on the panel asking a question such as: where they came from, what was their niche or line of work, what or where had they performed before, etc.

In other words, by asking the right questions, it was possible for anyone on the panel to discover who the mystery person was. But unless this person had done something to set themselves apart, or had created a unique niche, the participant often remained unknown, simply because they hadn’t really done anything that set them apart from everyone else.

An author’s ability to successfully market themselves is a lot like being that ‘mystery guest’. When you first emerge out onto the landscape of readership and publishing, no one (except for your friends and family, agent and editor) really knows who you are.  You may have even been around on the social network scene for a while, but without being intentionally engaged in the community you surf in, and establishing yourself as someone worth investing time and money in, you too will go undiscovered.

So how do we take everything we’ve been working on: building community, honing our craft, developing credibility and becoming socially visible, and roll it into a marketing strategy that will take us to that all important goal of getting our work in the hands of readers, agents and publishers?

How do we market ourselves from obscurity to financial viability?

I decided to start with “Books & Such”   Blogger, Janet Kobobel Grant.  In Janet’s 2 part post, “What Do Your Readers Really Want From You?”, she  uses Jessica Beinecke , (digital story-teller who teaches  Mandarin Chinese youth,  American slang via her online program ,OMG! 美语, ) successful YouTube video feeds  to highlight the power of engaging our community in unique ways,  that also allow us to be ourselves, build friendships and connect with our audience at a deeper level.

“Your mission in connecting with your readers online goes beyond getting them to buy your books, says Janet. If that’s your goal, then you’ll end up offering potential readers ads. But if your desire is to make an inherently deeper connection, then you’ll be more self-revelatory and, well, someone the reader feels as if he or she knows. That engenders loyalty that goes way beyond selling a copy of your latest work.”

My next stop was The Creative Penn where Joanna Penn doles out some much needed advice on different things that have worked to make her blog site voted the  Top 10 Blog Site two years in a row.

In order to stand out, you need to have an online presence with quality content that people want to consume either for information or entertainment. Each piece of content you put out there is another way for people to find you. By spreading your content across different media, you will be able to target a variety of audiences.”

Some of her recommendations are:

  1. Blogging (of course) for ourselves as well as others.  Joanna says that once we’ve gotten the hang of writing a blog on a consistent basis, we need to start looking for guest blogs on other sites as well as inviting other’s in our community and niche to guest blog on our own.

(A great collective blogging site I recently discovered is, My Blog Guest. This is a free guest blog site where authors can submit and access quality articles on a variety of topics, thus enlarging their sphere of influence, garnering new friends as well as marketing their PB.)

2.     Using online video and audio s such as YouTube, iTunes and webinars. One my favorite ‘go to gals’ for all things author>writing is C. Hope Clark. The other day she posted  her podcast interview on What The Glass Contains with  Austin Moss on SoundCloud, a free site that lets you record and upload sound and connect to SM like Twitter, FB and Tumblr.

3.     Joanna also recommended uploading drawings (such as sketches or maps of your book), doodles or pictures that can help to engage your audience with more of who you are and what you’re doing. You could use this to tell about your hobbies, vacations, friends and family.

4.     And of course there is the standard; SM of Twitter, FB etc. I love to Share other bloggers, authors work on-line at places like Digg, Stumble Upon, Tumblr and Linkedin.  It’s a good way to build community as well as let other people know what my likes and dislikes are. I’ve had several people stop by my site simply because of what I posted on SM.

5.     Developing a schedule for blogging, writing, networking and marketing. Her list entails everything from daily Tweets, to using links in post, to audio>video, to how many books to write per year.  I have started using a program called Free Mind, that lets ne visually map out my blog post for the next year. I’ve also used it for my ghost blogging as well as a way to strategize plot and chapter outlines.

And of course no article would be complete without going over to C. Hope Clark’s site and taking a look at what her favorite marketing tools, which are writing articles and using postcards. As an author (Low Country Bribe) and free-lance writer, Hope understands the power behind authors getting their work out where editors, publisher’s and other writers can see it (She attributes much of her success as an author to learning how write content in 700 words or less under deadline). And using bright, shiny well designed postcards as a means of giving away something for free that customers and followers are less likely to put down and lose.

While researching this post I came across an article by Robert Lee Brewer, (site owner of My Name is Not Bob) entitled How to Brand Yourself (And Take Over the World). In it he makes an astute comment about writers and authors in general,

“First off, I know that personal branding is a topic that will probably turn many writers off. For one thing, many writers (including myself) like to think of themselves as unique creative talents. For another thing, isn’t branding reserved for businesses (not writers)? Shocker: If you’re a writer who’s interested in getting published and making an income (whether supplemental or full) from your writing, then you’re in the business of writing…”

Whether we write because it’s an addiction we don’t’ want to be rescued from, or we write because  we have a BA in Journalism and believe its compulsory, the brutal fact is,  the responsibility for marketing ourselves is serious business.  From the moment we start taking ourselves as writers and authors seriously until the last breath leaves our bodies, the PB and marketing of ourselves will never stop. Be it guest blogging for one of our peers, submitting a first draft to our online writers group for critiquing,   to announcing the launch of our first book the process of marketing ourselves will never stop.

By building a strong foundation of community, credibility, content and visibility, we as writers will develop a PB that is not only marketable, but sellable. Who better to help promote ‘You’ than the people and communities you and I have taken the time to share, comment and interact with?  Sure there a lots of other ways, in which we might reach the public without having to extend ourselves beyond laptops, book signings and occasional Twitter or Facebook posts. But when things get tight and money is held close to the chest, people tend to spend where loyalty has been earned.

Creating Author Visibility

Building a Personal Brand isn’t for the meek and mild. It takes commitment, hard work and a lot of intentionality.   Whether you are Building a Community, Branding an In-Credible You, or looking to make yourself visible, the road to successful PB is going to be paved with time, sweat equity and a lot of coffee.

So where do we start? How do we go about becoming ‘visible’ to the community that we’ve chosen to build in?  In my own journey, I’ve found that there as many variables as there are writer’s willing to give advice.

When I first started taking a look at how to go about developing a visible online presence, the task seemed completely over whelming, even daunting.  I meet with a local writers group twice a month, and when I would listen to them talk about the two thousand and one things a writer needs to do before even considering   sending out their first query letter, I have to be honest, there were more than just a few occasions when I found myself driving away thinking, “All I want to do is write. If I had wanted to be in sales and marketing, I would have stayed in interior design.”

But A Type personalities are never daunted for long, so I made a decision to begin educating myself as quickly as possible.  For the next couple of months, if I wasn’t writing, I was perusing  the internet and library, gathering together everything I could find on the subject of writers and developing visible branding.  At the end I found four items most frequently listed as ‘must do’s’ for building author visibility.

  • Blogging
  • Writer’s Groups
  • Commenting and Forums
  • Social Media (Twitter, FB)

Let’s start with: Blogging;

The powers that be almost unanimously agreed that anyone wanting to develop any type of PB or online presence has to have a web or blog site where they can post on a regular basis and let the community get to know them.

Now for most of you, the subject of blogging, is by now, probably blasé’, and you’re doing your best to keep from yawning.  Yet I wouldn’t be that quick to judge this part of my post as unworthy of your notice. There are some really great blogger-writers out there, and the really good ones have a following that is pretty impressive.  They’re like the E. F. Hutton’s of the blogging world; when they speak, everyone listens.

Now granted not all of them write novels or non-fiction work, but the quality of content they deliver on a regular basis makes it possible for others like me, to break down the process of developing a personal brand into bit size pieces that are do-able. And let’s face it; all the information in the world won’t ‘getter done’  if we can’t see the trees within the forest.

So with my brain loaded down with ‘How To, Where To, and How Often’, I set about finding a blog spot that fit me.

But finding the right blog site can be as challenging as finding a great fitting pair of tennis shoes for wide-flat-feet; one brand does not fit all.  Some sites require little or no knowledge of site construction, while others should be labeled: Enter at Your Own Risk. But after a few bungled attempts, I finally found one , WordPress.com (which  practically  uses crayons in the support and how-to tutorials with lots of pictures, videos and examples) that worked for me (Since this post is about building personal branding, not blog sites, I’ll leave that subject for another time.).

The next step in the journey was even more challenging than getting a blog that fit. What to write about? I wasn’t anywhere near the same playing field as those writers and bloggers I had begun to follow, but sharing the blather of everyday life had (and still has) absolutely no appeal.

As favor would have it, while I was out cruising through my favorite bloggers-authors sites, I came across this comment by Suzan Butler, author of pirate anthology, Spells and Swashbucklers, “As a writer, your blog is your showcase; much like a photographer’s online portfolio is theirs. It shows your personality, your voice, your writing style. People who mesh with your blog will mesh with your writing. And the more people who show up will see your name over and over. If it’s a familiar name, they’re more likely to pick up your book when it’s time.”

Our blogging posts are like a window into the soul of who we are as writers.  They need to be a reflection of what we’re passionate about, and if we’ve already got a manuscript or two under our belts, then they should also give our future readership insight into who they will be investing their time and money in,  every time they click, buy and read our work.

Writer’s Groups;

Almost every article I’ve ever read, from publisher, to editor, to agent to author, says the same thing;  become part of  local and online writing groups, where we can share our work, get critiqued by fellow authors, agents, and editors, and learn from their critique of others.  It’s often one of the best places for iron sharpening iron.

Being part of a community oflike-minded individual’s is also a great place to go when we need reminding,  that even if Uncle Carl doesn’t think our attempts to become a successful writer qualifies as a real job, there are still hundreds of others who do.

Commenting & Forums;

Connecting with other bloggers and writers is one of the most powerful online tools we have for building visibility. What better way to establish our presence and get to know our neighbors than to read and comment on what they are writing about.  Nothing establishes rapport with fellow authors quicker than stopping by and saying something encouraging about their work.  It is especially powerful when we use something they’ve written in one or more of our own posts.  What better way to make someone feel honored   than when someone else likes what they have said enough to quote it?

Dan Schawbel,  author of Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success (Kaplan, April 09),  and owner of the award-winning Personal Branding Blog had this to say about using the comment‘ factor, ” Bloggers love comments. Don’t even deny it! When you comment on someone else’s blog it’s like a kudos or a pat on the back. A blogger is more apt to comment back on your blog, subscribe and link to your blog if you’re a part of their community. If you comment on every blog in your industry on a consistent basis, people will get to know you based on your avatar (go to gravatar.com) and your brand will flourish.”

It’s a great way to give what blogger>author Kristin Nador calls ‘shout outs’. Free PR. Who doesn’t love it!   Before you know it, you’ve just added one more person to the community of people who now know who you are.

Social Media;

Social Media or SM is such a ‘tag’ word now days that I don’t think a lot needs to be said. I would like to comment on some of the abuse I’ve seen though, like using it to air your personal grievances or bad mouth other social media or platforms. Whether we like it or not, once something gets on the internet, it will always be out there somewhere, just waiting to come back and bite you in the hinder parts of whatever you’re currently doing.

C. Hope Clark has some great net-etiquette user-friendly tips on how to Tweet in her post, Twitter Peeve’s.  She has also shares  11 things she believes helps people find us,   “How do People Find You”.

  • Your website
  • Your blog
  • Your Facebook
  • Your Twitter
  • Your LinkedIn
  • Your writing clubs
  • Your previous magazine editors
  • Your previous guest blogs
  • Your speaking engagements
  • Your blog posts on other blogs
  • Your guest appearances online and in person

“Notice that the above ways to find you, dictate that you be PROACTIVE. And it means that you KEEP being proactive. The minute you snooze, expecting others to spread the word, the word slows down and disappears. Ask anyone with an online business or multiple books in a backlist.”

Branding | In-Credible You

Merriam-Webster.com: Credibility> the quality or power of inspiring belief.

In my last post on Personal Branding, I talked about the need for authors to lay their foundation of PB by building an intentional community of relationships through; writer groups, forums, online critiques and conversations.

Just as the external structure of a house (paint, window decor and strategically placed landscaping) is not what gives a home it’s true value, so an author’s glossy photo, pretty cover art and eye-catching story title are not what will give them the power of credibility for the long haul.

Light years ago while attending a conference on marketing,  I heard a speaker say that it takes the average person seeing or hearing the same thing a minimum of seven times before it becomes a point of recognition for them.

As an example they used KFC’s franchise agreement which stated (at that time) that there must be a minimum of seven Colonial Sander pictures visible to the customer at all times. The reason, they were using the earned credibility of the Colonel’s face as a guarantee that you and I would not regret investing our time, money and gastrointestinal organs to KFC’s care.

In other words just seeing that snowy white head, Santa like smile and twinkly eyes were enough to assure us, that as soon as we slapped down $3.99, we were guaranteed twenty minutes of culinary delight.

So how was the KFC franchise able to convince customer’s that the face of a cherubic elderly gentleman was all that was needed to assure them that their investment was well spent? By capitalizing on the credibility that Harland David “Colonial” Sanders spent over twenty years developing.

Long before Personal Branding became a marketing cliché’ the man behind KFC understood that in order for him to become successful he would need two things; a product that would set him apart from his competitor’s and a visual marker for the buying public to link too.

Now you and I may not be selling chicken or bleaching our hair white and putting on white suites, but we are trying to establish ourselves as authors worth the investment of others.

So how do we go about doing that? How do we build credibility with our fellow writers, agents, publishers and life-sustaining readers that assure them that we are a good investment of their time and money?

We start by adjusting the lenses of our perception to include not only the immediate, but the future as well. Instead of looking for instant gratification and award-winning results the first time we finish a piece, we accept the reality that it takes more than one book or manuscript to develop our voice, style and worth.

Next we choose to see each rejected short story, magazine article and peer-review as iron sharpening iron.  After that we write, write and re-write the same paragraph, chapter and story until we are utterly convinced that it can’t ever get better (six months later we review and start re-writing it again).

An editor friend of mine once said that every paragraph should be re-written until you truly believe you can’t write it any better. Then put it aside for a while. When you’ve all but forgotten about it, take it out and you’ll probably find that you can.

In her article 4 Reasons to Write Several Books, literary agent Rachelle Gardner says, “Nearly all successfully published authors will have written two or more books before they get their first contract offer.” Here are her four reasons why.

  1. Practice: it takes a few tries to write a viable book.
  2. Repeatability: you need to finish more than one novel to get a feel for whether you can do it again.
  3. Timing: It takes writing multiple books to know who long it takes to write one.
  4. Confidence: Writing multiple books give you the confidence to know you’re a writer.

Taking the time to establish an In-Credible You is both an investment in the future as well as the framework for outlasting those who don’t.

Bottom line, if you want to become an author who is known for producing work that sets them apart from the crowd and whose credibility gives their followers a sense of trust and expectation, then take the time to establish the kind of authorship and PB platform that will go the distance now.

Building a Community

In the not-so-distant past it took an agent, editor, publisher, and any number of other PR type individual’s to create and build an author’s Personal Brand.  For longer than many of us can remember, an author’s sole responsibility was to write a publish worthy book, work through the editing process and hope that the advance held out long enough for he or she  to go on tour, promote their work and garner sales.

But those days of author invisibility are slipping away nearly as fast as Einstein’s Theory of Relativity .  With the advent of electronic gadgets, heightened readership and escalating cost vs. net ratios; it is no longer equitable for publishing houses to foot the bill of an author’s promotional management.  For better or worse, in today’s market the responsibility for building and maintaining an author’s brand is in the hands of the author themselves.

Chief Branding Specialist Laura Pasternak says that authors like William Shakespeare, E.E. Cummings, Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King are a success because, “Successful authors, like successful businesses, learn to manage their brand. They promote it in everything they do. And over time, their brand pays back huge dividends by promoting them.”

Each found their writing niche, developed a unique voice amongst their peers and through careful branding, eventually became rather like ‘fathers’ to the genre or style in which they rule.

So where does an emerging author even start building a personal brand? Besides the obvious places such as Twitter and Facebook, how does someone like myself (whose sole notoriety to fame are the short stories my English teacher sent off to be published by his college professor buddies and a very badly written stack of poetry I sent my ninth grade boyfriend during summer vacation) insert their toe in the waters of Social Media and begin to swim?

According to Copyblogger Bryan Clark , one of the key ingredients in any personal branding strategy is to begin connecting to other people.  “Whether you’re trying to sell something or build traffic to your blog, connecting with people is the key.”

Whether you’re selling cosmetics behind a counter or going door to door with a bag full of dirt and the newest whiz-bang carpet cleaner, making a personal connection with your audience can mean the difference between solicited rejection and five-minute partnerships.  The first one will earn you nothing more than hurt feelings and cold shoulder’s, while  the second will get you a warm smile and a recommendation on his or hers list of sale persons worthy of mention.

Developing author branding is no different from any other endeavor of life; without intentional relationships to promote and sustain it, everything of value will eventually fade away.

So where do these intentional investments begin? For this writer they began on four fronts.

First I sought out like-minded individuals through a local writer’s group where I could engage in mutual frustration, drink artificial sweetened water and be reminded that all the greatest writer’s started out just like us.

Next I cruised the internet  in search of other writing groups where the critique of my work would  be more genre specific and I could learn from some of the  editors and agents  that often frequented the sites.

Thirdly I started a blog on wordpress.com and began a regular post about the journey of writing a first novel.  And of course with that territory came reading and commenting on other blogger sites who,  had  either  shown an interest in mine or were discovered via the ones I  had started following.

In 2011 Laura Spencer wrote a post entitled In Defense of Blogging Reciprocity in which she address a social media specialist comments that they wished blogging reciprocity would lose its significance, “Yes, I practice blogging reciprocity and I do so willingly. I love the idea of connecting and networking with other bloggers who have taken the time to comment on my posts…”

If the number of comments I’ve read on sites such as Jane Freidman, Kristin Nador, Robert Lee Brewer and Porter Anderson , then I would have to agree with Laura; reciprocal blogging is necessary way to stay connected with those who have chosen to connect with you.

And lastly I went with the flow and began following on Twitter and friending on Facebook. But I don’t Twit or Friend just anyone; even my 144 character bird noises and frequent informational posts are with individual’s that I am serious about building relationships with.  I’m in this for the long haul and the investments I’m making now will be as important to my future as they are to those I’m investing in.

By building an intentional community of relationships, in essence an author is laying the cornerstone of his or her present-future framework of visibility. Whether its leaving a thoughtful comment in someone else’s blog post, giving them a ‘shout-out’ in your own or dialoging with like-minded artists, the people you take the time to notice, will in the long run, reciprocate by taking the time to notice you.

Personal Branding @2.0| Here’s Johnny…!


The Power Behind Author Recognition 

In 1957 a man named Dick Clark became the branded ‘America’s Oldest Teenager‘, when millions of other teenager’s across the Western world sat before their black and white televisions and dreamed of becoming the next lucky boy or girl picked to appear on a newly televised program called American Bandstand.

In 1962 the world branded a radio talk show host named Johnny Carson , King of Late Night Television when they heard Ed McMahon say, Heeeere’s Johnny!

In 1963 a black Baptist Ministry named Martin Luther King Jr stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, gave a speech entitled “I Have A Dream“, and forever branded the battle against racial bigotry by the profile of his face.

Time has been bookmarked by individual’s whose names have become the brand by which we recognize and interpret mankind’s cultural evolution.

Individuals such as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Constantine, Martin Luther, Joan of Arc, Albert Einstein, Vladimir Lenin, Harriet Tubman, Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Amelia Earhart, Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, Madeleine Albright, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline,  Neil Armstrong, Princes Diana, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are just a handful of people whose names have become the branding for government, religion, quantum physics, social revolution, genocide, war, peace, music, pulp-fiction reality, PC’s and metadata @4GSpeed technology.

Culture is being redefined by people who are willing to step out of line, leave the familiarity of the common and brand themselves by the nations they ruled, the social injustice they challenged or the dreams they dreamed. The result is, when you and I talk about democracy, religious persecution, social injustice and the what if possibilities, these are the branded names at the forefront of our thoughts.

In my post Personal Branding @1.0 | The Power of a Name, I talked about growing up in the 60′ and 70′s and recognizing early on how much power there was, both in fact and fiction, within a name.

Names have the power to draw our attention to individuals who have become synonymous with social irresponsibility, fashion, automobiles and photography. By drawing us to themselves, they have the power to influence how we perceive the institution, product or social media they claim to represent.

In today’s audio-visual-techno world, ideals, objects and futures are bought and sold within the moment by moment context of a branded face or name.

With literally tens of thousands of new books being written by bushy-tailed, hopeful new authors per year, the competition for recognition is fierce. You might even say it verges on the nearly impossible.

According to C. Hope Clark, author, freelance writer and manager of Funds for Writer’s (a weekly newsletter service for writers), becoming an established author is not for the faint of heart. It takes tons of sweat equity to perfect your craft, persistence to see it published, and tenacity to get it in front of reader’s and kept it there.

So why is Personal Branding so important to emerging authors?

In her article, The Basics of Author Branding, Theresa Meyer says, Strong brands bring in dollars. A strong brand will influence buyers to consider purchasing you first when they have only limited money to buy their books. It will create a loyal readership that will bring you bigger contracts from publishers. It will help you win awards because you stand out clearly against other brands in the same market space. It will make what your story is about nearly meaningless.

Did you catch that last line? Let me post it again, Strong brands…will make what your story is about nearly meaningless.

According to Meyer, once an author has developed a strong, recognizable name or brand, their staying power within the literary world is no longer about the books they write, but about the author themselves.

Whoa there! What does she mean it’s no longer about the books? How can any sane, rational person even remotely imply that an established authors staying power is about the brand and not the book?

Is she nuts?

Made my head tilt sideways too.

Until I gave it some thought, which eventually led me to agree.

How many of us can hardly wait for our favorite authors to finish the next promised book? I don’t know about you, but as soon as I get wind of the next Terry Brooks novel or Janet Evanovitch’s, Stephanie Plum escapade, my psych immediately shifts into countdown mode.

And when I finally do get my hands on it, I don’t even bother to look at the inside jacket or read the back cover. All I know is that it’s written by my favorite author and that’s good enough for me.

Sold! Do you take Visa or AMEX?

So what is it that makes these authors so outstanding that reader’s like you and I will forgo Starbucks for the next two weeks just so we can afford to claim their newest book as our own? How have they managed to create such a sense of anticipation in us that we find ourselves practically holding our breath?

Meyer’s calls it, ‘emotional Velcro’; that certain something that causes an author to be able to tap into the emotions of their reader’s and makes them stick to the author like glue; a subliminal tractor beam of imagination which promises to deliver untold hours of endorphin to our thirsty souls.

But how? How did they manage to ‘tag’ our souls and win our loyalty without so much as a handshake or gift card to Starbucks?

Via the hundreds of hours they have spent building and developing their Personal Brand. An intentional strategy to develop connections within the writing world by participating in forums, contributing in the comment portion of their favorite blogger/writer and developing relational interaction with the guru’s of the craft.

These Branded faces of mystery, suspense, murder, horror, fantasy, romance and mayhem built their own Personal Brand by investing time within the social framework of sites like Twitter, Face Book and Google +,  in order to meet new people and update those they already know.

They built their Personal Branding the same way they built the framework for their book or novel; by deciding the path they wanted to take, imagining the image they wanted to portray, and investing the time and energy it takes to project that face to the world.

Yet the strategy for branding themselves didn’t actually wait until after they had written their first article, first book or set up their first blog or website. No, the real starting point had its origins at a much more grass-roots level than mere articles, books or blogs.

 Personal Branding actually begins at that point of chaos where the newly emerging us is a lot like creation itself; an idea is being dreamed, a millennia is spent thinking about it, a plan is finally made and then we start gathering the materials for our own personal  assembly.

Personal Branding @1.0 | The Power of a Name


Growing up during the 60′s and 70′s, brands like Levi, Keds, Singer, Montgomery Ward’s, Jiffy Peanut Butter, Tab, Dr. Pepper, and Palmolive were standards by which we lived. Back then there weren’t as many choices of jeans, tennis shoes, clothing stores, food items or soap, so often the Brand name very often became synonymous with the product it’s self. 

For example many people call aluminum metal mini blinds Levelor blinds, not realizing that Levelor is the name of a company that makes and sells mini blinds, not the blinds themselves. Yet if I were to say I was buying Levelors, most people who grew up during the 20th century would immediately think, “She’s buying metal mini blinds”. 

In today’s ever evolving social networking branding can mean the difference between notoriety and obscurity. In the realm of publishing alone, name branding has been elevated to almost god like status.  By it’s very nature, an author is known, a publishing house is reviewed, technology explodes and SE’s such as Google, Yahoo and Bing weld the power to either crown us kings and queens or demote us to the shadowed recesses of pages 2 through eternity on the web map of relevancy. 

But did the power of a name really begin with modern-day technology or did it start much earlier in time? Is it really fair to assign cyber-polytheism as the fall guys of our identities when in fact the idea of names and power has been around since the dawn of mankind? 

Throughout history the mythology of true names or ‘branding’ was believed to hold great power. For instance, if a person knew the true or real name of a god, deity or person, than the one possessing that knowledge would be able to use that power as means to make said god, deity or person do or say whatever they wanted. 

The early Egyptians believed that an individual’s true name contained the very essence or soul of that person and that within their soul lay the DNA of who they really were. In her article  The Power of a Name‘  © Kristen Hanley Cardozo states, All throughout mythology, examples can be found of secret names, names that had the power to destroy, and names that had the power to bring great rewards…A person could not exist without his name.’  

In ancient Hebrew the name of God was considered to be so holy and all-powerful that Jews were not allowed to use it. Instead, he was called YHWH, and to be allowed to even write the word was a holy and sacred act that required the scribe to first go through a period of cleansing and sanctification before taking up pen and parchment. 

SF writer’s such as Ursula K Le Guin ( Earthsea), Christopher Paolini’s  (Alagaesia), Terry Brooks (Shanara) and Jim Butcher (Harry Dresden) have woven this concept into the back-story and plot line of their own books.  Matter of fact, the author’s themselves have become branding tags that weld great power on the Twin Peaks of Publishing and Authorship

Today’a Hollywood stars have requently become the branding power behind cars (‘Diddy’ and Mercedes-Benz), technology (Ashton Kutcher’s  and Nikon), political agendas (President of the United States, Governor of California) and social world issues.  Individual’s like Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, Bono,  Julia Roberts, George Clooney,  Bill and Linda Gates have become synonymous with wealth, power, and influence and often use their name and the infuence it represents to affect the welfare of small nations. 

Recent reality shows have in only a matter of months,  elevated obscure individual’s like Snooki (Nicole Polizzi), Kim Kardashian,  and Jon & Kate (Gosselin)  to exaggerated heights of stardom simply by spotlighting  a situation, branding it and inviting the world to sit down and watch in real-time how it plays out.  

So if names and branding are such an important part of elevating emerging writer’s (such as myself and other’s) out of obscurity (and  into the eye of agents, publisher’s and worldwide readership), what are some of the steps that we can take to begin building our own? 

Should we change our name to one that sounds stronger like Billie Letts character, Noblee Nation did when she named her daughter Americus, …a name that means something…a sturdy name…a strong name…? Should we look to world leaders and people of influence and adopt one of theirs in hopes that the deeds and exploits under which they performed would, like osmosis seep over onto us? 

Or do we hold on to the one we already have, work out the dents, perfect our craft and start parking it out  under blog sites, Ezine’s, short stories, and anywhere else we can find that will allow us to post our wares?
